Passionate about bringing the transformative power of music to all, Tianyi Lu is the inaugural Female-Conductor-in-Residence with the Welsh National Opera, principal conductor of the St. Woolos Sinfonia and regularly conducts concerts in the UK, Europe, Australasia and the USA. Recent highlights include concerts with the Auckland Philharmonia, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Turku Philharmonic, Bucharest Radio Symphony, and the Hallé Orchestra.
A Chinese-born New Zealander, Tianyi studied a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours at the University of Auckland, before studying at the University of Melbourne. After completing her Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting with Distinction at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Tianyi was selected for the Linda and Mitch Hart Institute for Women Conductors at The Dallas Opera, worked as a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and was the inaugural Assistant Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
In 2020 Tianyi was the first woman to win First Prize in the 11th International Conducting Competition Guido Cantelli in Italy. She also won First Prize at the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors Competition held in Germany, which had 437 applicants from 56 countries.
